Recognizing Blountsville as a significant town of early Alabama which was built upon Scots-Irish ideals, members of the Blountsville Historical Society have been gathering and sharing the town’s history since 1990.
Hosting the Forrest-Streight Raid since 1999, they have used proceeds to further history- and heritage-related projects including development of Blountsville’s seven-acre Historical Park.
Members (most of whom do not actually live in Blountsville) have many interests that meld into the society’s goals, and some of the group’s activities have included displays, building restoration, landscaping, costume construction, living history presentations (including the Forrest-Streight Raid), concerts, school presentations, parades, cemetery walks, a lecture series, book publication, a time capsule, and guest presentations at other clubs. The James Ray Kuykendall Local Historical Society Award was presented to the society in 2006 by the Alabama Historical Assocation in recognition for the society’s dedicated work.
Presidents of the Blountsville Historical Society have been Marie Gray, James Brindley, Jane Wright, and currently, Jeff Thompson. Meetings are second Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Historical Park, with dues only $10 (students only $1). If you’re interested in joining these hard-working volunteers, call Jeff at (205) 429-4232 for information.
