2009 Blountsville Historical Park Activities
During the summer, there have been living history events that were free to the public. The first was a reenactment of Col. John Coffee and the Tennessee Volunteers who came along the old Bear Meat Cabin road after burning an Indian village in Walker County. In 1813, they were en route to meet Gen. Andrew Jackson at Fort Gunter in order to avenge the Ft. Mims massacre. The matter was settled at Horshoe Bend when the Creek Indians met their fate. A few Creeks attacked our marching volunteers along the historic road in 2009.
The following month, reenactors camped along the old road, prepared food and relaxed as settlers coming to their “promised land” of 1816 would have. Visitors enjoyed talking with the dedicated reenactors and historians about the experience. Covered wagon rides were provided as well.
On November 7, there will be an event “Called to Arms” to honor our esteemed military veterans of all periods. There will be living history encampments and museum displays. Veterans may engage in conversations of their experiences and ”show and tell” their military artifacts. We plan to have representations of most wars, and invite reenactors or veterans to participate. On December 6, 2-4 p.m., the Blountsville Historical Society will host a Christmas Open House at the park. Once again, the buildings will be decked out in bygone ways. ‘Hope to see you then!
